A lot has happened in the last month, and we’re excited to share some of the highlights with you today!

First up was our incredible annual Sydney Dinner, which took place at the beginning of this month. Over 220 people joined us for an exceptional night of unity, celebration and impact — we raised over $340,000, making it our most successful event EVER. Asante sana (thank you very much in Kiswahili) to everyone who joined us to celebrate, donate and bid on our show-stopping auction items, kindly gifted to So They Can by a number of generous supporters.

This year we were delighted to have Roselyne, our Tanzania County Manager, join us for the evening. Through her special keynote presentation, she brought to life our work and impact in Africa, and highlighted the growing need for support in our African communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this year’s event possible, including our pro bono Auctioneer, Adam, our photographer, Kirsten Delaney, and our incredible volunteers — we couldn’t do it without all of you!

Our first panel event in Sydney!

Last month our inaugural Q&A panel event, ‘Education in Africa, Why Bother?’ took place, kindly hosted by the Macquarie Group in Sydney.

Our wonderful ambassador, Peter Overton was the facilitator for the event, leading an insightful and thought-provoking discussion on the significance of investing in international development, and its impact on the global economy and the future of humanity.

The key takeaway? We all have the power to make meaningful change and empower the next generation through education.

More than $90,000 was raised through the event — we thank Sam Kennard from Kennards Self Storage and the Macquarie Group Foundation for their generous matching contributions

Medical camp in Baringo

Just last week our team in Kenya facilitated a successful medical camp in Baringo County. Throughout the 2-day camp, 1,000+ community members attended to receive a wide range of medical services, including general consultations, an eye clinic, ANC, lab services and malnutrition screenings.

Medical camps like these are essential given the serious lack of access to established medical centres in the region. 

How 116 mothers and fathers are ending violence and keeping children in school

A remarkable movement is quietly transforming the lives of children in rural Tanzania — one voice, one family, one village at a time.

So They Can’s Champion Mothers and Fathers — 116 everyday heroes trained and empowered by So They Can to protect children’s rights, prevent violence, and keep children in school.

All of our Champions are recognised by their t-shirts, which say: ‘In the Manyara region, a life without violence against women and children is possible.’

A special trip to our projects in Kenya and Tanzania

Last month we had the pleasure of welcoming a number of our Board Members from Australia, New Zealand and the UK to our projects in Kenya and Tanzania. 

Throughout the trip, the group visited a number of our partner schools, health clinics and community projects to experience the difference your support is having.

Big school upgrades in Tanzania

Last month we successfully handed over a number of impactful construction and renovation projects at 6 schools in Tanzania, including 7 new classrooms, two toilet blocks, a kitchen and storage space and a teachers’ office. 

These new, fully-equipped facilities will greatly improve the learning environment and quality of education for approximately 3,600 students who attend these schools every day. Thank you!
