Period poverty is a big problem that not only limits girls from receiving an education, but also deepens gender inequality and stigma. Many girls don’t have access to or cannot afford menstrual products or proper facilities — this results in weeks’ worth of missed school days throughout the year, or dropping out of school all together. For a child with a disability, independent mobility is a key determinant of their educational journey. Sadly for most families in our partner communities, the mobility support their child needs is not available. In partnership with Kyaro Assistive Tech, we’re on a mission to change this. Maria, a 5-year-old student at one of our partner schools, is one of many learners who has recently benefited from this new partnership — receiving a custom-made wheelchair enabling her to attend school. When 14-year-old Mercy* realised that her father had accepted a dowry of 2 bulls for her marriage, she desperately ran to Jeska’s house for help.

Mercy met Jeska, a So They Can Champion Mother – pictured here, when she came to her school to train students on child rights. From that initial meeting, Mercy knew that Jeska lived nearby and would do what she could to keep her safe from being sold off.
