88% of teachers have improved their teaching and learning pedagogy, compared to 65% in 2018. So They Can supports 316 teachers in 29 partner schools in Tanzania.

In 2024 So They Can conducted an independent Program Evaluation. It was an opportunity for us to assess our impact in learning and teaching through our Education Program. Our Teachers Development project reaches 316 teachers across 29 primary schools in Tanzania. We are proud of the significant improvement in their practice through our support.

Providing in-service professional development opportunities –  training, peer-to-peer network support, and mentoring – is central to our approach. Following on from our update about the new Primary Education Curriculum in Tanzania, in November 2024 we facilitated further teacher training, delivered by tutors from Mamire Teachers College.

154 teachers of pre-primary, Standard 1 and 3, further developed their skills in assessment and evaluation over 3 days of training. The sessions focussed on equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills on how to prepare assessments that adequately develop learners’ competencies aligned with the new curriculum. As an example, as a result of the training, teachers know how to construct an assessment for Standard 1 students for English as a subject, which has been a new addition to the curriculum.

As the 2024 school year draws to an end, we reflect on the contributions of all of our teachers, and so do parents. At Manyara Primary School, the parents expressed their gratitude in a meaningful way. When 100% of the Standard 7 students passed the Primary School Leaving Exam this year, parents showed their gratitude by buying the teachers new outfits (this post’s main photo) and taking them out to a learning trip and lunch.
