In a milestone moment for education in Tanzania, the Embassy of Japan in Tanzania and So They Can have signed a historic grant agreement for the construction of a classroom block and improved sanitation facilities at Orng’adida Primary School in Babati District, Manyara Region.

The partnership, made possible under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) program, will transform learning conditions for over 1,000 students at the partner school of So They Can. The project includes the construction of three fully furnished classrooms, new toilets for students and teachers, and a reliable water supply — a total investment of US$109,203.

At the signing ceremony on 22nd October 2025, His Excellency Honorable Ambassador of Japan to the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Mikami Yoichi, shared that this project marks Japan’s first GGHSP initiative in the Babati District. The signing was witnessed by Babati District Executive Director Anna Mbogo, who commended the partnership for enabling children to learn in a better environment and achieve their dreams.

So They Can’s Country Manager, Roselyne, expressed her heartfelt appreciation. ‘This project is a miracle for us. It strengthens our mission to change the lives of children living in poverty through education — Educate to Empower.’

During the ceremony the school’s Head Teacher, Madam Mwajuma Gallas, shared a gift of thanks directly from the school community. A Massai Shuka (pictured below) embroidered, by children as part of their youth income generating groups, with flowers to symbolise Japan’s well known flowers.

‘Together, we are building not just classrooms, but hope and opportunity for generations to come,’ Roselyne concluded.
