Learn about our sustained projects
We don't want communities to rely on us forever. We want to give them the skills and confidence so they can thrive independently.
Our commitment to sustainable development means that our projects will be around forever without relying on external funding.
By collaborating together with our communities in Kenya and Tanzania, we're working towards improving education, child wellbeing, women's empowerment and health care, so that children, individuals and families can thrive long term without our support.

Opening its doors in 2010, Aberdere Ranges Primary School (ARPS) was So They Can's founding and flagship project. ARPS is the only project where we built and established an entirely new government school, through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Kenya.
The experience shaped So They Can's approach since: to now partner directly with existing government schools and embed our model within the national education system.
In 2023, at the time of our exit:
+ 1,790 children had accessed quality primary education since 2010
+ 1,000+ students (51% girls) were enrolled from pre-primary to Standard 8
At the time of So They Can's exit, ARPS had an effective School Management Committee and significant parental engagement through an active Parents' Committee. The school had achieved increased levels of student attendance, retention (85%) and learning, as well as gender parity in enrolment. Students learned in safe, inclusive school infrastructure, including 29 classrooms, 13 administration facilities, a water borehole and a community water kiosk.
In 2026, three years after So They Can's exit, ARPS continues to go from strength to strength. In the 2025 national exam, 100% of Grade 6 students approached or exceeded their learning expectations, and 97% of ARPS students met or exceeded expectations. Enrolment has also continued to grow, from 1,068 students in 2023 to 1,285 in 2026.
In 2012, schools in Endakiso and Mamire Wards were severely under-resourced in teachers, infrastructure and materials. A consortium of stakeholders led by So They Can, including the Ministry of Education, the communities of Endakiso and Mamire Wards, and the Babati Rotary Club, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to respond to this gap and construct Mamire Teachers' College (MTC).
Since registration in 2014:
+ 1,155 teachers have graduated with a 2-year Certificate of Teacher Training, or a 3-year Diploma in Primary Education.
+ 233 teachers have been placed in program-supported schools for valuable practical experience to boost their employability.
+ The Government of Tanzania has invested over AUD $700,000 in infrastructure for the College.
Following a process of phased hand-over in 2020 to 2023 to the institution, So They Can formally ended its support of the College.

In 2015, So They Can entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health, Nakuru County, to support the New Canaan Health Clinic, a facility serving more than 10,000 displaced persons.
Prior to the partnership, the clinic offered only basic curative services. With So They Can's support, services expanded to:
+ Family planning
+ Ante-natal and post-natal care
+ Child welfare and immunisations
+ Laboratory services
+ HIV testing
+ Community follow-up
+ Prescribed medicines provided at no cost
By the time of So They Can's exit in 2021, the facility was treating approximately 2,000 patients every month.

Sew Women Can was established under So They Can's Women's Empowerment Program as a social enterprise that aimed to elevate women through education, skills creation, income generation and employment opportunities.
An additional layer of the project, bibi&me, was a social impact brand showcasing artisan products handmade by local women working together in weaving cooperatives in rural Kenya.
In 2021, after six years of success, So They Can handed the business over to the women who had been trained in sewing and business skills, allowing them to run and grow it independently.

So They Can is accredited by the Australian department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), responsible for managing the Australian government’s development program. So They Can receives support through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
So They Can is a registered charity in Australia (ABN 91 138 063 475), New Zealand (CC # 45673), a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit in the USA (EIN 47-1079440), and a UK charity with the Registered Charity Number 1213084.
