Moureen is a remarkable young woman, who has beaten the odds to become a university student.

In her hometown most girls face early marriage and pregnancy. Moureen not only finished secondary school, but she also achieved outstanding academic results. She was the only girl in East Pokot to receive a university placement last year, and she is now in the second year of a Bachelor of Education (Arts) at Kisii University. Her inspiring educational journey has been made possible through our Msomi Scholarship Program.

‘So They Can gave me an important opportunity, their support enabled me to go to school. I’m so grateful that they continue to believe in me, and now support my university fees.’

What makes Moureen even more remarkable is her commitment and sense of duty to give back. For her, it’s important to be an example to others and show them that no matter where you come from, with determination, hard work, and a commitment to giving back, that you can be the difference.

‘I want to be a role model to other girls in my community. I do not want to be idle with the skills that I have gained, and continue to gain, at University. I must give back to my community.’

She is already actively doing so! Over her recent 3-month holiday from university she volunteered at a local school, Chemolingot Boys High School, and taught Literature and English. Something she is keen to continue doing throughout her 4-year degree.

‘I think that my presence in the school (during her 3 months as a volunteer) demonstrates that it is possible to achieve whatever we want, regardless of our circumstances. Also by sharing my University life experience with school students, they become motivated to work harder, and join me’.
