Our school farms in Nakuru expand, ready for another productive year
Published 28th Apr, 2025
2024 saw improved food security in our partner primary schools in Nakuru. Our 4 school farms expanded in size, and so did their yields! 2,017kg of produce – beans, potatoes, maize, kale – were cultivated and harvested over 2.2 acres of school farmland. Its produce was used to serve up over 850,000 meals as part of the schools’ feeding programs.
2025 implementation is now underway. We’re building on our success, and scale-up continues. In March schools’ Shamba Letu (Our Farm) Club members – 40 children, 2 teachers and 2 Champion Parents from each school – were trained by Government Agricultural Extension Officers.

The training covered important key topics for effective agriculture including land identification and preparation, tools, planting, spacing, weeding, fertiliser, yields and record management. Following the training the Clubs will be responsible for farm management, which offers children a great opportunity for hands-on learning and skill development.
‘I just joined Shamba Letu Club, and I am excited to learn how to grow crops using smart farming techniques. I have already planted my first seedlings, and I can’t wait to see them grow’ .
– James, Grade 6, New Shamba Letu Club Member, from Kibowen Komen Primary School.
This year 8-acres will be farmed! It means that produce will increase significantly, by 1,024%. Our projections are that collectively 22,680kgs of maize and beans can be harvested this year with the additional farmland. We’re also installing a rainwater harvesting system, with 2 10,000L clean water storage tanks at one of the schools for improved water supply.
‘I enjoy participating in Shamba Letu club activities so as to learn better farming techniques. My goal is to become a farmer so that I can help address food insecurity in my community’
– Jacob, Grade 7, Muriricua Primary School.
